Mission

The mission of Bryn Mawr’s Study Abroad Committee is to help ensure the quality and accessibility of education abroad programs for students. This involves promoting student participation, reviewing additions and changes to the approved list of study abroad program options, ensuring academic rigor, and supporting the integration of study abroad programs with the College’s overall academic goals and strategic plan.

Committee members offer diverse perspectives on student applications and program options and help identify opportunities and challenges for study abroad at Bryn Mawr. Members represent and serve as a liaison to their departments on education abroad applicants, programs, and initiatives. They ensure the portfolio of program options are consistent with Bryn Mawr’s academic standards and align with department interests and student needs.

Goals

The goals of the Study Abroad Committee are threefold:

1. Advising – The Study Abroad Committee helps promote student participation and provides perspective on applications from students who want to study abroad during the academic year as part of their Bryn Mawr degree.

2. Academic Integration – The Study Abroad Committee works with Global Engagement to ensure student access to a diverse and relevant set of programmatic options, with rigor across the curriculum.

3. Support & Advocacy – The Study Abroad Committee liaises with academic departments on student outreach, program options, initiatives, and helps advance access & inclusivity across study abroad.

Study Abroad Application Review

The Study Abroad Committee is responsible for evaluating applications from all Bryn Mawr students who want to study abroad during the academic year as part of their Bryn Mawr degrees. The Study Abroad Committee determines a student’s eligibility by looking at a variety of factors, including the overall and major grade point averages, the intellectual coherence of the study abroad experience with the academic program, the student’s overall progress towards the degree, and faculty recommendations. After careful review of applications, the Committee will notify the student of their decision granting, denying, or giving conditions for permission to study abroad. Only those students whose plans are approved by the Committee will be allowed to transfer courses from their study abroad programs towards their Bryn Mawr degrees.

Study Abroad Program Review

During the academic year, students who want to transfer credit back to Bryn Mawr must select a program that is on the College’s approved list of programs. The College currently offers over 80 programs in more than 30 countries on its approved list. New programs can be proposed by Global Engagement, an academic department, or a member of the Study Abroad Committee.
The Study Abroad Committee reviews changes and additions to the approved list of program options for semester study, helping to ensure academic rigor and supporting the integration of study abroad programs with the College’s overall academic goals and strategic direction. Academic departments and the Global Engagement office work collaboratively to identify study abroad programs that best fit the particular academic needs of students, ensuring study abroad is as integrated as possible into students’ curricular pathways.

Promoting and Supporting Study Abroad Participation

Study Abroad Committee members serve as important sources of information, advocacy and support for the Office of Global Engagement across the College. They act as liaisons with their academic departments, students and staff colleagues across campus to promote study abroad participation, student outreach, program options, and initiatives, helping to advance access & ensure inclusivity in study abroad. Committee members offer important and diverse perspectives on opportunities and challenges for global engagement at Bryn Mawr.

The Study Abroad Committee plays an integral role in the College's study abroad program. Its members include:

• Inés Arribas, Senior Lecturer in Spanish
• Laura Been, Associate Professor of Psychology (Haverford College)
• Melissa Giess, Assistant Dean of the Sophomore Experience
• Alice Lesnick, Term Professor in the Dept. of Education, Director of the Layim Tehi Tuma/Thinking Together (LTT) Program in Ghana
• Camille L±ð³¦±ôè°ù±ð-³Ò°ù±ð²µ´Ç°ù²â, Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies and Director of the Institut d'Avignon
